Year 2
In Year 2 the children are inspired through an open-ended topic based approach, based on furthering curriculum skills. Our inspiring topics have included a look at the continent of “Africa”, “Space” and “The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl.” During our ‘Roald Dahl’ topic we encourage our pupils to look at every aspect of themselves, including looking after their well-being and health.
Additionally, we investigate British history by studying medieval times in “A Knight’s Tale” and the “The Great Fire of London”. Every area of the National Curriculum is covered throughout these topics using the Chris Quigley Depth of Learning skills and the learning objectivesare used to build on existing skills to encourage progression throughout the year. We use the pupils’ prior learning as a stepping stone to embrace new concepts, as they are encouraged to be active learners, developing strategies and using resources to work independently.
Each topic throughout the year begins with a ‘Stunning starter’ such as a “visit” from Neil Armstrong or African workshop at the start of the year. Every topic then works towards a fabulous finish sometimes involving the construction of an object such as an African rainmaker to use in a performance.
By the end of Year 2 we aim to happy, confident, independent children who have met their full potential and are ready and prepared for their move to Year 3.
