Year 2
In Year 2 the children are inspired through an open-ended topic based approach, based on furthering curriculum skills. Our inspiring topics have included a look at the continent of “Africa”, “Space” and “The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl.” During our ‘Roald Dahl’ topic we encourage our pupils to look at every aspect of themselves, including looking after their well-being and health. Additionally, we investigate British history by studying Castles and "The Great Fire of London".
Every area of the National Curriculum is covered throughout these skills-based topics to ensure the children are building their knowledge and topic related vocabulary. We ensure to build on existing skills to encourage progression throughout the year. We use the pupils' prior learning as a stepping stone to embrace new concepts, as they are encouraged to be active learners, developing strategies and using resources to work independently.
Within each topic there are many exciting learning opportunities. We use a range of rich texts such as 'Handa's Surprise', 'The Lonely Beast', 'Vlad and the Great Fire of London' and 'Tiny Crab is a Tidy Crab' to name just a few! We immerse the children in the topics with workshops, visits out of school and even some very special visitors such as Samuel Pepys!
With high expectations, our aim by the end of Year 2 is to have happy, confident, independent children who have met their full potential and are ready and prepared for their move to Year 3.
